EV Chargers · Hunton, North Yorkshire

Know the whole price before anyone parks on your drive. £1,400 for a standard fit.

Home EV chargers fitted across Wensleydale, Swaledale and out to York. That figure covers the EV distribution board, the Hypervolt charger with its 7.5m tethered lead, and 10m of supply cable from your board out to it. I have looked at your fuse board before I say it.

The car is the easy part.

Nobody hesitates over the charger because of the money. They hesitate because they cannot tell, from a Facebook page with no reviews on it, who is going to turn up and whether that person will explain anything.

The questions that come up:

“I don’t even know if our fuse box will cope, and I don’t want someone turning up and going ‘oh that’ll be extra’ halfway through the job.”
“This is the first car I’ve ever owned, so I don’t even know what questions I’m supposed to be asking about the electrics.”
“None of these local electrician pages have a single review on them, so I can’t tell who’s actually good.”
“We haven’t even ordered the car yet, I just want to know roughly what fitting a charger actually costs before we decide.”

Three ways this goes.

Same house, same fuse board, same car on the way. The difference is who looked at it first.

A number on a screen, worked out by someone who has never been to your house. Then the talk of DNO, ENA and biscuit tins starts, and you are none the wiser about what you are actually paying for.

EV distribution board, the Hypervolt with its 7.5m tethered lead, and 10m of supply cable from your board out to it. NAPIT certificate handed over, DNO notified. Anything more involved, and I price it properly rather than guess.

Who is actually doing the work.

I’m Jake Clark-Worsdale. Twelve years as an electrician, six of those running this business out of Hunton, covering rewires, consumer units, EICRs, new builds and farm electrics across a wide rural patch. Chargers are the same trade with a newer name on it.

The business has grown, so some work now goes in alongside trusted subcontractors. Every job is still overseen directly by me, with the same standard of paperwork and finish whoever is on the tools. It means I can get to you sooner without the job dropping a level.

The reason the price on this page has a scope attached to it is simple. People round here talk, and word gets round fast about anyone quoting one figure and charging another once the van is on the drive. So the fuse board gets looked at first, and then you get the number. Every job goes in to current wiring regulations, with proper certification once it is finished. Done properly, first time.

Three chargers. You pick.

The Hypervolt is what I fit most, and what I'd put on my own house. The other two are here because some jobs genuinely suit them better.

My pick, and the one I fit most

Hypervolt Home 3 Pro

The one I put on most walls. It takes your spare solar if you have panels, it runs on wifi, and if your signal is poor out in the sticks I can hardwire it straight into the router instead.

Hypervolt only build this one tethered. If you want a bare socket, look at the other two.

The solar specialist

myenergi Zappi

British made, and worth a look if solar is the whole reason you are asking. It is the unit built around diverting surplus, and it suits a house running two cars off one point.

Worth it if you have panels on the roof and want every spare unit going into the car.

If looks matter

Andersen Quartz

British made, and the lead winds away inside the unit so all you see on the wall is a plain cabinet. Eleven colours, so it can be matched to the render or the brick rather than fighting it.

Socketed£1,450
Tethered, 5.5m lead£1,520

The cheapest way to get a bare socket, and the tidiest thing on a wall either way.

Do you want a cable hanging there, or not

Tethered means the lead is fixed to the charger and it is always there, nothing to fetch from the boot and nothing to forget. That suits most people and it is what most of these go out as.

Socketed means a bare socket on the wall and you bring your own lead. It looks tidier when nothing is plugged in, it keeps the lead out of the weather in the boot, and it suits a house running two cars that take different leads. The Andersen Quartz socketed at £1,450 is the cheapest way into that, and the Zappi does one too. The Hypervolt does not, it is tethered only.

The £1,400 above is the standard Hypervolt fit with its 7.5m tethered lead. Lead length and which charger you go for move the price, and you get that figure in writing before anything starts. Same as ever: I look first, then I tell you the number.

Reviews are the one thing I am short of, and I would rather say that here than dress the page up. If you want to speak to someone whose work I have done, ask me on the call and I will sort it.

Worth a call, or not.

Get in touch if

  • The car is on order and you need the charger up before it lands
  • You have not bought the car yet and want the real cost first
  • Your fuse board is old and you suspect it needs sorting
  • You want one person accountable for the whole job
  • You are somewhere between Reeth and York and happy with a local electrician

Probably not for you if

  • You want the cheapest number on the internet and nothing else matters
  • You would rather nobody came out to look before pricing it
  • You need it done tomorrow with no site visit at all
  • You are after a workplace bank of chargers, which is a different conversation and a different price

What people ask before they book.

What does the £1,400 actually include?

The EV distribution board, the charger itself, and 10m of supply cable, which is the run from your board out to the charger rather than the charging lead. The NAPIT certificate is included and the DNO notification is handled for you. £1,400 is inclusive of VAT and covers a standard install.

Which charger do you fit as standard?

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro, 7.4kW, 32A single phase. It takes surplus solar if you have panels, runs on wifi, and can be hardwired to the router with an ethernet cable where the signal is poor. A myenergi Zappi and an Andersen Quartz are the two alternatives.

Can I have a socketed charger instead of a tethered one?

Yes, but not on the Hypervolt, which is only made tethered. The Andersen Quartz socketed at £1,450 is the cheapest way into a bare socket, and the myenergi Zappi does a socketed version at £1,460. Tethered means the lead is fixed to the charger and always there. Socketed means a bare socket on the wall and you bring your own lead.

Do you handle the DNO notification?

Yes, that is included in the price and handled for you. So is the NAPIT certificate, which is handed over on completion.

What if my fuse board is not up to it?

That is why the board gets looked at before a price is given. A consumer unit change is about £1,000 inclusive of VAT on its own. Done in the same visit as the charger, the two together come to £2,000 rather than the £2,400 they cost separately.

I have not ordered the car yet. Is it too early to ring?

No. Plenty of people ring while they are still deciding, because they want the real cost of the charger before they commit to the car. You get the same site visit and the same figure either way.
